Get Somewhere (Track 1 of forthcoming new album)

about

As the title says, this is track one of a new album, The Age of Misinformation, which is in the final stages. This tune, Get Somewhere, is as well, really, but it's in a pretty solid place - and so, here it is.

I wrote a lot during lockdown, especially the summer of 2020. This was one of the fruits of that time.

I have had a lot of fun working on it; recording all the little bits, moving them around, finding interesting ways to do things. For example, the bass on this tune is a Yamaha keytar from the 80s, dropped an octave and run through an Ashdown bass amp. I love the way it sounds. After the solo section, and at the end of the final verse, you'll hear the only spot in the song where I use the pitch shifter wheel - to really fun effect, I think.

I also discovered, on this tune, how good a flute/alto sax harmony can sound; it's eerie, almost like a Lowrey electric organ tone, but it has a distinctive, analog, wind-instrument sound. Tons of fun!

This tune is perhaps the most obviously Morphine-esque on the album; if you're not familiar with them, every song on every album is brilliant. Mark Sandman, the songwriter/singer and creative imprimatur of the band, is a big inspiration to me.

lyrics

Keep you in suspense
Might get a little ten(se)
Cut you down to size
Burn your pryin eyes

Gotta stay in touch
Don't think tew middle, but dewnt tyak tew much
Gotta keep it in check
In for a penny, what did you expect?

I'm not puttin you down
It's just easier when you're not around
Qu-est-ce-que vous aimez
Lookin for reasons or the right things to say

It's right behind you and it was always there
They're tryin to find you and you act iike you don't care
It's right behind you and it was never there
They're tryin to find you...
Gotta get somewhere
Gotta get somewhere
Gotta get somewhere
Gotta get somewhere

(instrumental break)

It's right behind you, and it was always there
I'd be kind to you, but I'd hate to be unfair
It's all around you and it was never there
I'd try to find you but I don't care

I don't care
I don't care
I don't care
I don't

Baritone guitar is tuned between a guitar and a bass (B E A D F# B). Extremely versatile, full, and very funky. Given its excellent qualities, it is surprisingly uncommon.

I "live loop", which lets me improvise on alto sax, flute, and guitar. Strong jazz and funk influences, but truly a wide variety. Even shit-kicking country at times. The Muse, she speaks; I hear.
